I just did an interview with ACE (alliance for climate education) on my experience with environmental activism and high school and college, and I wanted to share it with you! http://www.acespace.org/blog/2012/01/ace-alumna-profile-chloe/

Where do you go to college now and what work are you doing around climate change?

I go to Harvard College, and I’m involved with various projects both and on and off campus to educate people about climate change and contribute to mitigation efforts. I’m involved with one group that is organizing the first Green Economy Caucus in the Massachusetts Legislature. I’m part of another organization that is planning a renewable energy demonstration on campus to educate students about renewable energy and Harvard’s commitment to solar panels, wind power, and geothermal. I also work with an exclusively first-year organization dedicated to making energy-efficiency improvements around campus. Earlier in the year I worked on campus to protest the Keystone XL pipeline and educate students about the proposal. I am on the Editorial Board of the Harvard Crimson, writing about environmentalism on campus and around the world. I also write for Next Gen Journal to share some of my ideas about climate change and educate a larger audience. I tweet and maintain my website–First Here, Then Everywhere–as well.

Why did you decide to continue working on climate change in college?

Nature is my passion, and I want to continue dedicating my life to protecting our planet and its inhabitants. I believe that climate change is the defining issue of my generation. Today more than any point in history we are feeling the devastating effects of global warming: rising sea levels, droughts, floods, extreme precipitation, hurricanes, decreased agricultural productivity, dangerous air quality–now is the time for action. Colleges have enormous opportunities to support environmental activism. There are speakers, professors, research options, and classes. There are multiple environmental groups to choose from on campus and many others in the community. Plus, since many colleges are located in urban areas, there is the opportunity to get involved with policy-making. I come from a rural area where this range of options did not exist. It is even more inspiring to see all the amazing work in the college community.

What were some new things or different things about working on environmental issues in college vs. high school?

There were no opportunities for environmental activism at my school. I had to start from scratch with my peers. I founded the Climate Action Club (http://laclimateactionwebs.com) , and we spearheaded campaigns that suited our school and town, and we learned about networking, campaigning, fundraising, and educating along the way. In college–at least at my school–the foundation is already there. I didn’t need to begin an eco-club. I needed to fit into an already existing structure. It was interesting to see how college students approach environmentalism, and I think that Freshmen and Freshwomen have a unique ability to see this approach from a fresh perspective. Instead of asking “how do I get started,” I found myself asking “how do I expose more Freshmen and Freshwomen to these green clubs and opportunities?”

How did you find your college climate group?

I decided to join the three major environmental groups at Harvard so I could learn about their projects, goals, and strategies. It’s all about taking a leap of faith. It is a time commitment, but the best way to find “your” group is to understand all the groups and their distinct perspectives and priorities. I still haven’t committed myself to one group exclusively. All the student environmental groups overlap, and so I’m trying to find a way to unite them and increase efficiency and transparency so that, combined, there can be a bigger impact.

What did you learn in high school with your Action Team that has helped you be a college organizer?

Everything that I learned from high school is helping me in college. The major lesson that I learned in high school was that education is crucial to catalyze and sustain change. If people don’t understand why they need to act, they won’t. Environmental activism is as much human-centered as it is nature-centered. Yes, we are fighting to protect wilderness, stop deforestation, reduce pollution. But why? To create a healthier safer life for all creatures and humans. Many times activists tends to be too true to their name and only act. College students sometimes fall into this category. It is essential to remember that mitigating climate change won’t simply happen on the national, state, or even municipal level. Policy is important, but individual dedication is vital. Grassroots bottom-up movements in coordination with top-down legislation will enable a transition to a greener society.

What are you most excited about for this year or college in terms of the impact you hope to have?

I spent the majority of my first semester figuring out the different opportunities at Harvard and where I fit in. Now I feel like I have better grasp of what I want to be doing, and I have a bunch of different projects lined up for this semester. I am most excited about joining a community of vibrant, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and dedicated student environmentalists. There is a close-knit community at Harvard, and I’ve enjoyed getting to know its members. I’ve joined the Harvard newspaper, The Crimson, as an editorial writer. I am excited to write op-eds about environmental issues on campus and around the world.

What advice would you give ACE students heading off to college next year?

Maintain the lessons that you learned about environmental activism in high school, but be prepared to forget the structure. Be open to new opportunities. Be willing to try different types of campaigns. You might even stumble into something that you never dreamed of doing. There is a vast network that you can take advantage of, and try to soak in as much as you can. Attend guest lectures and try out different clubs. Make as many connections as you can. Jump in, don’t be shy. Don’t think that just because you’re a Freshman or Freshwoman that your opinions don’t count. Speak up, be active, get inspired.

This is the last installment of the series that I wrote for Next Gen Journal!

No matter what policies Bolivia or the United States institute, China must also be committed to mitigating climate change. It is one of the fastest growing economies with urban development at the heart of expansion. But environmental awareness has not accompanied this growth. 70% of China’s energy comes from coal, which is the most pollutive fossil fuel. Car pollution is rampant in cities as the number of vehicles in China surpasses 100 million. Emissions standards are low. Urban sprawl continues unchecked. Air quality is a significant problem, and the list of environmental problems continues.

China’s massive population means that environmental solutions must be adoptable on a wide-scale. The public does not have an awareness about climate change. International organizations and activists come to China to try to create a movement. I lived in Shanghai for three months, and I met with the leading environmental groups to learn about their strategies and goals. One organization, Greennovate, helps Chinese businesses go green. They also have environmental presentations in local high schools and have a “train the trainer” program to enable Chinese citizens to become environmental leaders in their communities. Another group, called Wellness Works, helps Chinese people reconnect with nature, promoting the idea that “what’s good for me is good for the planet.” Another major organization, the China GreenTech Initiative, acts as a liason between the government and business to help entrepreneurs and CEOs understand green incentives.

While these organizations have fantastic intentions, they are run by foreigners, creating a culture gap that most Chinese citizens will not cross. This gap has prevented external influences from initiating an environmental movement in Shanghai. Therefore a more sustainable China needs Chinese environmental activists and government involvement. The former is becoming more and more predominant as citizens fight to protect their resources. The latter is increasing, as well, but much more must be done.

The Chinese government can effect sweeping change quickly. In 2008, China banned all plastic bags. This action significantly reduced pollution and saved 1.6 million tons of oil. Not even most developed countries have been able to achieve this reform. China recently took measures to reduce one of the most harmful pollutants, PM 2.5. China’s 12th 5-year plan also contains plans to cut energy intensity by 16% and carbon intensity by 17%. China is currently on track to reduce carbon intensity 40-45% by 2020. They are one of the only countries to be on target for these kinds of standards.

The government can only do so much without the people. China needs its own authentic approach that empowers individuals to be green and brings environmentalism into mainstream consciousness. People need opportunities to recycle through efficient infrastructures that reduce emissions and close the waste loop. There is evidence that the government is moving in this direction. In the most recent 5-year plan, China called for a system that would recycle 70% of waste products by 2015. This will have societal ramifications beyond waste reduction. In conjunction with recycling, education programs are needed to help individuals understand why it is important that they recycle in the first place. Accessible opportunities and education will engage China’s massive population and reduce their environmental impact.

We are living in a time when climate change is affecting a majority of the globe in a tangible, real, powerful, and frightening way. Scientific data has concluded that climate change is accelerating at an unprecedented pace. Humanity must change its fossil-fuel-consuming ways and find alternative sources of energy. The world has the tools to begin a transition not only to a green economy, but a green society.

Diverse cultures, economies, resources, and growth patterns mean that distinct national strategies will be required to effect a global shift. As this series has illustrated, the United States, Bolivia, and China have different needs and must approach mitigation in their own way. Otherwise legislation will not be able to create meaningful sustainable change. International coordination can be more effective once nations create and commit to policies that will reduce their emissions and galvanize public support for environmental awareness. This is a crucial step towards creating a more sustainable future for our lives and those that follow.

Bolivia has 10 million people, and 2.8 million live in the city of La Paz. Yet the country is the size of California. The Andes mountain range looms overhead, and the geography includes everything from glaciers to jungle. Bolivians have a close relationship to their natural surroundings. The land sustains them. The Andean religion arises from this relationship. It is centered on Pachamama, which is the Quechua word for Mother Earth. The people believe that nature is a living entity and that humans should live in a symbiotic relationship with Pachamama. For example, we harvest potatoes and, in turn, sacrifice a guinea pig: we take something, and then we give something. There is reciprocity, equality, and respect.

The awareness of the balance between humans and nature extends to global environmental problems. When it comes to climate change, Bolivians believe that melting glaciers and warming temperatures are Pachamama’s punishment for humans cutting down too many trees and mining the mountains. How has humanity compensated for taking these natural gifts? We haven’t, and Pachamama is angry.

For a country that wants to coexist with Pachamama, Bolivia still has many environmental dangers. Melting glaciers threaten water sources, unsafe mining practices pollute the land, and destructive agricultural practices are rampant. These human-made disasters arrive not because Bolivians have lost their connection to nature but because they must have some way to make money and sustain the economy. Bolivia is a resource-rich nation, and uninformed governments have created an economy based on exploiting natural resources. Yet these are people that are connected to nature; thus solutions have been crafted around this cultural outlook

I spent three months in Bolivia in 2010, during which time I interviewed Shamans, teenagers, and farmers. I wanted to understand how they thought about nature and current environmental problems. One 17-year-old said that the environment “is the air. If we contaminate it, we are hurting ourselves. We need to orient ourselves more with Pachamama.” Calixto, a Shaman, said “climate change is humanity’s fault. We angered our earth. We didn’t ask permission to take…We have to coexist with Pachamama and restore equality.” David, a local farmer, had practical and spiritual insights. “I grew up in the countryside, and now we can’t grow lettuce because the soil is dry. Some plants are disappearing, and new plants and insects are appearing….If mountain snow goes, then water sources…dry up. I am an animal, too. The environment needs to be good for me to be good. My life depends on nature. Nature connects generations.”

These perspectives are drastically different from anything that I’ve heard in the United States. I have not heard many American youth talk about the environment in such a spiritual way. The 17-year-old was simply talking about what is important in his life. Calixto is not an intellectual or a politician, yet his theory about climate change is somewhat true. Humans have treated Mother Nature unfairly, and now we are paying the price. David can feel the effect of climate change on his livelihood, and he understands his connection with nature. Many Americans have not put these two pieces together.

Bolivia hosted the World People’s Conference on Climate Change in 2010, a meeting of NGOs, international governments, scientists, and activists to discuss solutions to climate change. The goal was to include the voices of poor and developing countries in international climate change agreements. One of the main outcomes of the conference was a People’s Agreement that proposed alternative solutions to mitigating global warming and illustrated a different cultural perspective.

The focus of the text emphasizes the need to restore equilibrium with Mother Nature. Humans have dominated the planet, taking too much and not giving back. The earth is imbalanced, and our current path will only lead to destruction. We must recognize Mother Earth as the source of all life and ensure a healthy planet for ourselves and future generations. We must change the way we interact with nature and find ways to develop society and maintain Pachamama’s health. It is an essential human right.

This language is in stark contrast to a speech that President Obama gave at the 2009 Copenhagen climate conference. Obama talked about how climate change posed a risk to national security and the economy. He stressed the need to change the way that we produce energy–to make it more sustainable for our economy and human life. The solution to climate change is “mitigation, transparency, financing.” Obama did not mention anthropogenic environmental degradation, nor did he mention the inextricable relationship between humans and their environment.

Bolivians need national policies that impose stringent environmental regulations. This is especially urgent in the mining and forestry sectors, where damage threatens the country’s ability to adapt to climate change. Solutions are also needed to maintain water supplies as glacial waters diminish. Green technologies will be needed to improve irrigation, harvest rain water, and purify glacial runoff.

The differences between the Cochabamba text and Obama’s speech and different mitigation strategies highlight how each country must approach climate change policy in their own way. Obama’s approach would not resonate with Bolivians, just as the spiritual perspective of Bolivians would not affect most Americans. This point further suggests the difficulties of bridging distinct cultural worldviews that international conferences face. Individualized and coordinated responses are needed from each government.
